(KRON) — A teacher employed by the Mill Valley Unified School District was arrested Tuesday on child sex charges, according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Darren Smith of Fairfax was arrested on charges that included lewd and lascivious acts with a child and continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Smith’s arrest, officials said, stemmed from a report to the sheriff’s office from the school district last month. When the district became aware of allegations against Smith, it contacted the sheriff’s office and placed him on leave.

Smith has been employed by the Mill Valley Unified School District since August of 2013. He currently remains on administrative leave, according to police.

Detectives developed probable cause to arrest him following a thorough investigation of the allegations including forensic evidence. He was booked into Marin County Jail where he is being held on $200,000 bail.
