Welcome to Arrest Stories. A twenty-three-year-old Bexar County Sheriff's deputy was arrested and fired after being caught smoking a marijuana vape pen in a staff restroom at the county detention center. Here's what may have happened.
Thursday evening turned into a career-ending nightmare for Ivan Estrada, a newly hired deputy with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. Around nine o'clock in the evening, another deputy taking a break detected a strong marijuana odor emanating from the staff restroom at the detention facility.
Investigators quickly determined that Estrada was the last person to use the restroom. When initially questioned about the suspicious smell, Estrada denied having any marijuana. However, under further questioning, the young deputy's story crumbled. He eventually admitted to smoking a THC vape pen while on duty inside the staff bathroom.
Estrada cooperated by turning over the vape pen to investigators. A field test conducted on the device confirmed the presence of THC, the psychoactive compound found in marijuana. Following the confirmation, Estrada was immediately arrested and transported to the South Tower where he was booked on possession of a controlled substance charges.
The swift investigation involved multiple deputies working together to hold their colleague accountable. Sheriff's officials praised the thorough work of the investigating team. One official stated, "Half a dozen dedicated deputies worked to bring someone to justice who violated his oath. That oathbreaker is now in jail and unemployed. I'm thankful to this dedicated group who went above and beyond to ensure swift justice."
Estrada's employment with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office was short-lived, having been hired in April. Due to his probationary status as a new employee, he was immediately dismissed and cannot appeal the termination decision. His bond was set at forty thousand dollars.
The case highlights the serious consequences law enforcement officers face when they violate their sworn duties, especially while working inside a correctional facility.
