Welcome to Arrest Stories. A twenty-five-year-old former FedEx employee faces fraud charges after allegedly stealing lottery tickets that fell from a damaged package and attempting to cash them at two Florence area stores. Here's what may have happened.
Trevor Jamir Hampton found himself in handcuffs last Thursday following an investigation into missing South Carolina Education Lottery scratch-off tickets. The Kingstree man was working at the FedEx Ground facility in Florence when the alleged scheme unfolded on August nineteenth.
According to arrest reports, Hampton discovered scratch-off lottery tickets that had fallen out of a damaged package while being shipped through the Florence facility. Rather than reporting the incident or securing the loose tickets, investigators say Hampton pocketed the wayward lottery games and left work with plans to cash them in.
The twenty-five-year-old's alleged get-rich-quick scheme quickly unraveled when surveillance cameras captured him attempting to redeem the stolen tickets. Video evidence shows Hampton visiting two separate locations on East Palmetto Street, first trying his luck at Cruizers before moving on to Sav Mart. Both establishments have security systems that recorded the transactions.
Law enforcement officials say Hampton admitted to taking the South Carolina Education Lottery scratch-off tickets during questioning on August nineteenth, the same day he allegedly committed the theft and attempted to pass the fraudulent tickets at both stores.
The investigation revealed Hampton's employment status gave him access to packages moving through the shipping facility, creating the opportunity for the alleged theft. Security footage from both retail locations provided crucial evidence linking Hampton to the fraudulent redemption attempts.
Hampton was formally arrested last Thursday and subsequently booked into the Florence County Detention Center on September eighteenth. He now faces two serious charges: intent to defraud and possession of counterfeit game tickets. The case involves approximately ten thousand dollars in potential losses.
