Welcome to Arrest Stories. A forty-six-year-old Florida woman was arrested for retail theft after a store manager tracked her down using her vehicle's license plate number. Here's what may have happened.
On Sunday in Clermont, Florida, Pamela May Corliss allegedly walked out of a retail store with a cart full of stolen groceries without paying for the items. According to police reports, her daughter went through the self-checkout process and paid for her own items before meeting up with Corliss outside the store.
The two women then loaded all the merchandise into their vehicle and left the premises together. However, the store manager had been observing the incident and was able to obtain the license plate number from their departing vehicle.
When the manager ran the tag number, it came back registered to Pamela May Corliss. Armed with this information, law enforcement was able to locate her residence in Clermont.
A deputy later visited Corliss at her home address to investigate the retail theft allegation. During the encounter with the deputy, Corliss admitted that she had not paid for the groceries she had taken from the store.
The stolen merchandise was valued at approximately five hundred dollars according to the police report. Following her admission, Corliss was placed under arrest for retail theft charges.
She was subsequently transported to the Lake County Jail to be processed and booked on the theft charges. The case demonstrates how modern loss prevention techniques, including the tracking of license plate information, can lead to the swift identification and apprehension of suspected shoplifters.
The incident highlights the risks individuals take when attempting to steal merchandise from retail establishments, as store managers and loss prevention personnel are often trained to gather identifying information that can lead law enforcement directly to suspects' homes.
