Welcome to Arrest Stories. A twenty-five-year-old former college football player faces serious charges after allegedly strangling his girlfriend during a violent domestic dispute that left her unconscious in Columbus. Here's what may have happened.
According to police reports, the disturbing incident unfolded Friday morning as Michael Roen McCullough was driving his girlfriend home following what began as an argument between the couple. The situation rapidly escalated into a terrifying ordeal that would leave the victim with multiple visible injuries.
During the drive, McCullough allegedly destroyed his girlfriend's cell phone before launching a brutal physical assault. Police reports indicate he punched the woman in the face multiple times, causing significant trauma to her facial area. The attack then became even more dangerous when McCullough allegedly grabbed his girlfriend's throat with one hand while simultaneously pushing her against the vehicle's window.
The victim reported she could not breathe during the strangulation and felt panicked as McCullough allegedly maintained his grip on her throat. The assault was so severe that the woman lost consciousness during the incident. She told investigators she has no memory of being driven the rest of the way home and only regained consciousness when they arrived and parked in front of their residence.
When officers responded to the domestic violence incident Friday around nine o'clock in the evening in the one hundred block of Marconi Boulevard, they documented extensive injuries on the victim. She had sustained a black eye, facial cuts, a swollen lower lip, and visible bruising on her throat area.
McCullough, who previously played football at a major university, was subsequently arrested and charged with strangulation in connection with the alleged assault. The former athlete now faces serious legal consequences for what authorities describe as a violent domestic incident that could have had fatal consequences.
