Gibson told officers he thought the lights were on, explaining that the car's settings were new to him. What started as a simple warning with no ticket planned quickly escalated when officers ran a routine license check on Gibson's California driver's license.
The check revealed Gibson had an active warrant from Mansfield Municipal Court that had been issued in twenty twenty-three. The warrant stemmed from a speeding violation Gibson received in December twenty twenty-two, when he was clocked driving ninety miles per hour in a seventy mile per hour zone. Gibson had failed to appear in court for that ticket and never paid the required fine, keeping the warrant active.
Gibson was taken into custody during the traffic stop. He later addressed the situation publicly, stating "Just to clear the air — the recent report made my traffic stop sound bigger than it was. I was pulled over for my kit lights, not a speeding arrest. I missed the earlier court date simply because I hadn't fully moved back yet."
Gibson also commented on his past experiences with law enforcement, saying "Every time I've ever been arrested out here, or pulled over, every officer has allowed me to go home and handle the stuff from home."
Gibson paid the fine for the original speeding ticket later that Monday night after being booked. The case is now considered closed. In his statement, Gibson emphasized his community focus, adding "What really matters to me is the four hundred kids affected by the Project fire that we showed up for the day before. I'm back in Cleveland full-time to serve this community, and that's where my focus will stay."
