Welcome to Arrest Stories. A former Texas school superintendent faces charges for allegedly failing to report child abuse while attempting to conceal the allegations. Here's what may have happened.
Brian David Wilcox, a fifty-year-old former superintendent of Winnsboro Independent School District in Wood County, Texas, was arrested and charged with two counts of failure to report child abuse with intent to conceal. Wilcox was booked into Wood County Jail on Monday and held on thirty thousand dollars bond before bonding out on Tuesday.
The Wood County Sheriff's Office alleges that Wilcox attempted to hide abuse and manipulate evidence during an investigation into allegations of misconduct within the school district. According to police reports, Wilcox became aware of accusations before his summer vacation but failed to report the allegations before leaving for the beach.
Wilcox had resigned as Winnsboro ISD superintendent in September after previously serving as superintendent in Red Lick, Texas, and Smackover, Arkansas. Aaron Nation, who had been serving as interim superintendent starting in September, was named full-time superintendent on January fifth and officially appointed by the school board on January sixth.
The investigation reveals that Wilcox dismissed the allegations, stating he believed the matter concerned a Winnsboro ISD coach having a relationship with a recent graduate. When authorities requested communication records, Wilcox refused to provide calls or texts between himself, Ashley Wilcox, and Nation regarding the investigation, despite the cell phones being district-paid and subject to legal requests.
During the investigation, Wilcox reportedly told officials, "I feel like I've done my duty, cause the law, and they're trying to catch me on little technicalities. I'm being honest, that's why I called you in. I never for a second thought it was true." He also stated, "I've had my own investigation. I'm closing my investigation."
Legal counsel for Wilcox indicated intentions to enter a plea of not guilty to the charges. The defense has been in communication with the Texas Rangers regarding their ongoing investigation.
