Welcome to Arrest Stories. Ohio State women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff was arrested on May sixth after police found him sitting in his Toyota Sequoia partially parked in his own front yard following reports of reckless driving through Dublin neighborhoods. Here's what may have happened.
According to official police reports, Dublin officers responded to calls about a vehicle driving erratically, striking multiple curbs and cutting through residential lawns. When authorities arrived at the scene, they discovered fifty-five-year-old Kevin McGuff sitting in his Toyota Sequoia, which was parked partially off his driveway and onto the grass of his front yard.
Body camera footage captured the dramatic encounter as officers approached McGuff's vehicle. For over two minutes, the longtime basketball coach was unable to open his driver door or window, raising immediate suspicions among responding officers.
When McGuff finally made contact with police, he explained he was returning home after having dinner at J Liu restaurant. However, officers conducted three separate in-car tests due to their suspicion of impairment. McGuff subsequently failed multiple field sobriety tests, leading to his arrest for operating a vehicle while impaired.
The charges became public knowledge six days later on May twelfth. McGuff later addressed the situation publicly, stating quote "No excuses. I made a horrible mistake" and calling it a "really, really horrible situation."
Athletic director Ross Bjork imposed a two-week unpaid suspension as part of Ohio State's internal disciplinary process. McGuff reached out to the Wexner Medical Center for support and treatment during the summer months. He also personally called each player individually during summer break to discuss the arrest.
McGuff emphasized his remorse, saying quote "I take very, very seriously the opportunity to be the head coach at Ohio State and how I represent the university — most importantly, the young women in our program."
The coach has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Officials noted the situation was fortunate to end without physical injuries.
All suspects presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Do not take this report as factual, always verify facts. Thanks for watching Arrest Stories.
