On March fourth, twenty twenty-six, Andrew Zuni was driving a stolen Chevrolet Aveo around Albuquerque when law enforcement spotted the vehicle. A marked patrol unit attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Zuni, but he refused to pull over and instead fled at a high rate of speed.
According to police reports, Zuni drove recklessly with no regard for law-abiding citizens during the pursuit. The chase came to an abrupt end when Zuni lost control of the stolen vehicle and crashed near the intersection of Copper Avenue Northeast and Cagua Drive Northeast.
What happened next allegedly shows the lengths Zuni went to destroy potential evidence. Before attempting to flee the scene on foot, Zuni reportedly used a gas can and cloth materials to start a fire inside the crashed Chevrolet Aveo. This apparent attempt to torch the vehicle occurred directly in front of responding officers.
Zuni now faces multiple serious charges stemming from this incident. He has been charged with receiving and transferring a stolen motor vehicle, aggravated fleeing from law enforcement, and felon in possession of a firearm. The alleged arson attempt has resulted in additional charges of arson of property and tampering with evidence.
The incident highlights the dangerous lengths some suspects will go to evade capture and destroy evidence. The high-speed chase through Albuquerque streets put innocent motorists and pedestrians at risk, while the alleged attempt to burn the stolen vehicle created additional safety hazards for first responders and nearby residents.
Law enforcement was able to apprehend Zuni despite his attempts to flee on foot after the crash and alleged arson attempt.
