Michael A. Bryant was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of his mother, Bonnie L. Smith, in East Moline, Illinois. Smith died on Friday, January twenty-third, in an apartment on the eleven hundred block of Fifteenth Avenue in East Moline.
At the time of Smith's death, Bryant was out of jail on pretrial release for a prior domestic violence case and had been ordered by the court to stay away from his mother. Despite this no-contact order, police say Bryant fatally stabbed Smith in her apartment.
Bryant was already being held at the Rock Island County Jail when he was formally arrested for his mother's murder. He had been detained on a petition to revoke or modify his pretrial release conditions related to the prior domestic battery case against him.
East Moline police investigated the stabbing death and determined Bryant was responsible for killing his mother. The first-degree murder charge against Bryant is classified as a Class M Felony under Illinois law.
The case highlights the tragic escalation of domestic violence, as Bryant allegedly violated his court-ordered stay-away conditions and killed the very person the order was meant to protect. Smith's death occurred while her son was supposed to be maintaining distance from her as part of his pretrial release agreement for the previous domestic violence charges.
