Michael Woods was taken into custody Tuesday night following a violent attack on the sixth floor of the Jermyn Apartments in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Police report that Woods attacked three women and a dog with a machete in what authorities are calling a shocking act of violence.
The attack resulted in the deaths of two women, ages sixty-one and fifty-nine, who succumbed to their injuries from the assault. A third woman survived the attack but sustained severe injuries, with Woods nearly severing one of her hands during the incident.
According to police reports, Woods also killed a service dog during the rampage, stabbing the animal to death. The attack took place on the same floor where Woods resided in the apartment building.
Woods had been living at the Jermyn Apartments since two thousand twenty, having moved there from Jersey City, New Jersey. The building became the scene of the deadly encounter that would leave two families grieving and a community shaken.
Police apprehended Woods as he was leaving the building Tuesday night. Officers responded to the scene and took him into custody without further incident.
Woods now faces charges of criminal homicide, attempted homicide, and aggravated assault in connection with the attacks on the three women. Additional charges related to cruelty to animals are expected in connection with the death of the service dog.
