Welcome to Arrest Stories. A thirty-five-year-old mother in Bexar County was arrested after allegedly telling her daughter under the age of twelve to walk nineteen miles to elementary school alone. Here's what may have happened.
According to police reports, Lucia Victoria Marie Cruz had consumed an entire bottle of wine Tuesday night following an argument with her boyfriend and passed out. When her daughter attempted to wake Cruz up the following morning to get a ride to school, Cruz briefly roused but refused to take her daughter to Carnahan Elementary School. Instead, Cruz allegedly told the child to walk there on her own before going back to sleep.
The distance between the child's home on Orpheus Way and Peggy Carnahan Elementary School is more than nineteen miles. According to Google Maps, making the trip on foot would take approximately seven hours.
The young girl began walking alone on State Highway two eleven on the far West Side, attempting to stay off the roadway but being forced closer to traffic due to heavy brush and cacti along the shoulder. The child had no cellphone or any means of communication as she made her way toward school.
After walking approximately one mile from home, a witness spotted the child walking along the dangerous highway and intervened. The witness picked up the girl, drove her to school, and contacted school officials about the situation.
Local residents expressed shock at the incident. One community member stated, "My wife would kill me. My kids barely even walk down the street to take the bus, and I walk with them." Another resident commented on the dangerous conditions, saying, "It's super congested with all the traffic and stuff like that. So having a little girl like that walk down two eleven don't make no sense."
Cruz was arrested and later released on a fifteen thousand dollar bond.
