Welcome to Arrest Stories. A routine traffic stop on Interstate Fifteen in Mesquite led to the discovery of ninety pounds of crystal methamphetamine with a street value of five hundred thirty thousand dollars, resulting in the arrest of Marco Antonio Diaz on Monday. Here's what may have happened.
It was a typical Monday afternoon when a Mesquite police officer conducted a traffic stop on a black GMC pickup truck traveling northbound on Interstate Fifteen. The officer became suspicious after observing behavior that suggested possible drug-related activity during the initial contact with the driver.
What started as a routine traffic enforcement quickly escalated when the driver, later identified as Marco Antonio Diaz, consented to both a personal search and a vehicle search. The officer's instincts proved correct as a K-nine unit was brought to the scene and immediately alerted to the smell of illegal narcotics.
The investigation took a dramatic turn when officers discovered the truck's bed contained a large aftermarket fuel tank that appeared empty but showed clear signs of modification. Upon closer inspection, investigators found a concealed trapdoor built into the bottom of the fuel tank - a sophisticated hiding spot that contained forty-five individually packaged bags of crystal methamphetamine.
Adding to the evidence, officers discovered multiple checks written to Diaz for two thousand dollars each, along with accompanying memos that officials say suggest a connection to drug trafficking operations.
Local authorities praised the work of their officers and K-nine unit in what they're calling a major drug bust. "This arrest highlights the exceptional work of our officers and K-nine unit in keeping dangerous narcotics out of our community," officials stated. "Ninety pounds of methamphetamine represents countless lives that this poison could have harmed. Our department remains committed to safeguarding the citizens of Mesquite and the surrounding areas from the dangers of drug trafficking."
Diaz is expected to face arraignment on September twenty-fourth.
