Welcome to Arrest Stories. A Miami police officer faces aggravated assault charges after allegedly firing her weapon during a heated domestic dispute that began with her own nine-one-one call for help. Here's what may have happened.
Twenty-seven-year-old Sthephany Canizares found herself behind bars Sunday evening following a dramatic confrontation at her Miami-Dade residence that started when she discovered what she described as "inappropriate messages" on her boyfriend's phone. According to official reports, the couple had been "having relationship issues for the past few days" before the situation reached a dangerous breaking point.
The incident began when Canizares herself called nine-one-one, telling dispatchers she was being held against her will by her boyfriend. However, when Miami-Dade Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, Canizares unexpectedly fled from the responding officers, creating an even more volatile situation.
What happened next paints a terrifying picture of domestic violence escalation. The boyfriend discovered Canizares outside the residence holding a firearm during their ongoing argument. Fearing for his safety and that of his daughter, the boyfriend quickly locked himself and the child inside a bedroom while arming himself with his own weapon.
From inside the secured room, the boyfriend reported hearing what sounded like a gunshot as the confrontation continued. Deputies later arrested Canizares on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm in what officials classified as a domestic violence case.
The Miami Police Department swiftly responded to the arrest of one of their own officers. Canizares has been relieved of duty with pay "pending the outcome of an active investigation," according to department officials.
Following her Friday arrest, Canizares was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on Sunday before posting a five-thousand-five-hundred-dollar bond and being released Monday afternoon. She appeared in bond court while her boyfriend participated via video conference.
