Bradford Kanan Bit K-9 Beny
Welcome to Arrest Stories.
Bradford Kanan, a 37-year-old man with an active warrant, allegedly threatened to shoot deputies and then bit a police dog in the neck and ear.
Here's what may have happened.
The incident began Wednesday evening near South Atlantic Avenue in New Smyrna Beach. Deputies responded to a suspicious person call and identified the driver as Bradford Kanan. Police say Kanan refused to exit his vehicle and threatened officers with a weapon. Kanan drove away from the scene, abandoning his truck near the Canaveral National Seashore boat ramp. He hid in thick brush and palm fronds for approximately three hours while deputies deployed K-9 units and drones. When K-9 Beny located Kanan, the suspect allegedly struck and bit the dog in the neck and ear. After being handcuffed, Kanan allegedly struck a law enforcement officer. Kanan claimed he was armed and threatened to shoot deputies, but no weapon was found on him. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being transported to Volusia County Branch Jail. Kanan is formally charged with aggravated assault, battery on a K-9, fleeing and eluding, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Authorities also cite an active warrant for domestic battery battery and a charge of battery on a law enforcement officer. All suspects presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
