Welcome to Arrest Stories. A sixty-seven-year-old Florida man is behind bars after a Tinder date involving a so-called sugar baby arrangement ended in a vehicle chase, a crash, and an alleged threat at gunpoint. Heres what may have happened.
According to the Sumter County Sheriffs Office, David Allen O'Brien, sixty-seven, of The Villages in Sumter County, Florida, was arrested following an incident reported at approximately ten forty-four in the evening on July twenty-first, near the area of Buena Vista Boulevard and El Camino Real.
Investigators say the trouble began weeks earlier. On July twelfth, O'Brien matched with a twenty-one-year-old woman on Tinder, messaging her that he was, quote, looking for a sugar baby. He allegedly offered her one thousand dollars per visit, plus dinner. He also reportedly told her, quote, I love to show for you.
On the evening of July twenty-first, the two met for their first date. The woman arrived accompanied by three friends, who waited for her while she spent time with O'Brien. According to the arrest report, O'Brien gave her two hundred dollars at the start of the evening and took her to a lingerie store, where she purchased three items. He then gave her an additional six hundred dollars over dinner. The two later returned to O'Brien's home on San Bernardo Road in The Villages.
At the residence, the woman told deputies she began to feel uncomfortable and contacted her friends to come pick her up. When O'Brien realized she intended to leave, he allegedly demanded the money back, telling her, quote, that was not the agreement. She refused, made her way outside, and left with her sister and two friends.
Deputies say O'Brien then pursued the group in his Ford F-one-fifty pickup truck. At a roundabout near Buena Vista Boulevard and El Camino Real, he allegedly rammed the rear of the victims' vehicle, causing it to strike a pole. He then came around again and struck the car a second time, leaving it disabled.
Three occupants fled on foot. O'Brien allegedly cornered one male victim near the disabled car, pointed a Ruger twenty-two semi-automatic handgun at him, and threatened to kill him if he did not get on the ground. According to the arrest report, quote, that victim was on the ground face-down and noticed that O'Brien was distracted, so he was able to move to safety. O'Brien then attempted to locate the other victims briefly until he heard law enforcement arriving.
Deputies responded to multiple nine-one-one calls about the crash and a report of a person with a gun. All four victims were evaluated by emergency medical personnel and later interviewed. They stated they were in fear for their lives.
O'Brien was taken into custody and transported to the Sumter County Detention Center. He faces one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without the intent to kill and four counts of aggravated battery. He was later released on a ninety thousand dollar bond. His arraignment is scheduled for August fourteenth.
