Welcome to Arrest Stories. A former Florida gubernatorial candidate and one-time rising star of the Democratic Party was arrested in Alabama on drug-related charges. Heres what may have happened.

On the evening of July two, twenty twenty-six, at approximately ten forty-five p.m., officers with the Daphne Police Department observed a vehicle being driven erratically along U.S. Highway ninety-eight near North Main Street in Daphne, Alabama, a coastal community approximately eleven miles east of Mobile. Officers initiated a traffic stop and upon approaching the vehicle, identified the driver as forty-six-year-old Andrew Gillum, the former mayor of Tallahassee and the two thousand eighteen Democratic nominee for governor of Florida.

Officers reported observing a glass pipe in plain view on the center console of the vehicle. That observation provided probable cause for a search. During the search, investigators recovered three packages of a substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, totaling approximately three grams. Officers also documented eight pre-rolled marijuana cigarettes, four cut straws, three pipes, and a bong.

Gillum was taken into custody and booked into the Baldwin County Jail. He was released the following day, July three, twenty twenty-six, on a combined bond of six thousand five hundred dollars. He faces one felony count of possession of a controlled substance, along with misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana for personal use and possession of drug paraphernalia. The dangerous drugs felony charge could carry up to five years in prison and a fine of up to seven thousand five hundred dollars if he is convicted. Each misdemeanor charge could carry up to one year in jail and a fine of up to six thousand dollars.

Baldwin County Assistant District Attorney John Oxford confirmed he planned to review thirty narcotics cases for possible transfer to drug court, including Gillums. Oxford noted that Gillums previously publicized two thousand twenty Miami hotel incident would be considered as part of that review. In that two thousand twenty incident, law enforcement found Gillum incoherent at the Mondrian South Beach Hotel, where suspected methamphetamine was found in the room. Gillum was not charged in that case.

Oxford described the potential benefit of the drug court path, saying it differs from traditional prosecution, which typically involves a guilty plea by the defendant with a probation sentence and the conviction on their record. Defendants accepted into the program must complete a two-year rehabilitation program that may include inpatient or outpatient treatment, participation in twelve-step recovery meetings, and regular drug testing. Successful completion could result in the charges being dismissed. No final decision on Gillums eligibility has been announced.

Gillum made history in two thousand eighteen as the first Black major party nominee for governor in Floridas history, losing to Republican Ron DeSantis by a margin of approximately thirty-three thousand votes, less than half a percentage point. In two thousand twenty-two, Gillum was indicted on federal charges including wire fraud and conspiracy. In May two thousand twenty-three, a federal jury acquitted him of one count of lying to the FBI, while the jury deadlocked on the remaining counts, leading U.S. District Judge Allen Winsor to declare a mistrial.

Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, commenting on the arrest on Newsmax, said, Florida dodged a bullet. Sad to see that happening in his life, but, look, at the end of the day, the right person won the gubernatorial election in two thousand eighteen. That was Ron DeSantis, and our states been better for it.

In Tallahassee, reactions were more measured. Pastor Rudy Ferguson, Sr., of New Birth Tabernacle of Praise wrote, Addiction is a wound, not an identity. A battle, not a verdict. God is still in the healing business. Restoration is our assignment. Compassion is our calling. Prayer is our posture.
