Welcome to Arrest Stories. A former Kansas Jayhawks basketball player is facing an attempted first-degree murder charge after a July Fourth party in North Memphis ended in gunfire. Heres what may have happened.
Memphis native Lagerald Vick, age twenty-nine, was arrested by the Memphis Police Department on Saturday and booked into Shelby County Jail. His bond was set at one point five million dollars. Vick is also charged with using a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
According to court documents, Memphis Police Department officers responded to a shooting with persons struck call at Regional One Hospital in the early hours of July fifth. The victim, Carlos Funzie, told investigators he had been at a party on Madewell Drive in North Memphis on July fourth when, at around eleven p.m., a man approached him with a handgun tucked under his armpit.
Funzie said a verbal confrontation occurred. He attempted to de-escalate the situation and turned away from the man. The suspect then allegedly fired one shot, striking Funzie in the back. Funzie was transported to Regional One Hospital by private vehicle.
During the investigation, Funzie provided officers with the first name of the suspect. That information led investigators to Vick, who Funzie later identified in a photo lineup as the suspected gunman.
Vick was charged on July eighth, according to court documents. He was scheduled to appear in court Monday for arraignment, with a bail review hearing set for Tuesday.
Vick played for the Kansas Jayhawks from two thousand fifteen through two thousand nineteen, appearing in ninety-four games and making forty-one starts. During his senior season, he averaged fourteen point one points per game. In early February of his senior year, Vick took a leave of absence for personal matters, missing the final eight games of the season.
This is not Vicks first encounter with the legal system. Earlier this year, he faced two felony charges and a misdemeanor, including aggravated burglary, theft of property, and misdemeanor vandalism, related to an alleged incident involving an ex-girlfriends home. That case is due back in court on July thirtieth.
