According to Maricopa County jail records, Rider was taken into custody Thursday night and booked Friday morning for failing to comply with a court order. The misdemeanor offense resulted in a guilty finding, and Rider is expected to remain in custody until Tuesday.
This latest arrest marks the third time Rider has found himself behind bars in a relatively short period. His previous two arrests both occurred in December and were connected to a protective order filed by his estranged wife, Vanessa. Rider had filed for divorce in November two thousand twenty four.
On December fourth, Rider was arrested in Gilbert, Arizona, and charged with one count of interfering with judicial proceedings related to that protective order. Then on December fifteenth, a hearing was scheduled to determine whether the order should be extended. Vanessa appeared in court that day, but Rider did not. He was subsequently arrested again for failing to appear. The judge, with Vanessa present, signed off on keeping the protective order in place.
The protective order required Rider to have no contact with Vanessa or their fifteen year old son and to stay away from both their residence and their sons school. Vanessa alleged that Rider had been hostile toward her and their son on multiple occasions, including allegedly saying, quote, Youre gonna get your ass slapped, and quote, Shut the f--k up before I kick this door down and whoop you.
Rider denied those allegations, claiming they were made in retaliation for his filing for divorce. Vanessa, however, stated the order was sought solely to protect herself and their child from further harm. Riders attorney, Benjamin Taylor, told The Daily Mail, quote, Mr. Rider will not be making any further comments.
It remains unclear whether this latest arrest is also connected to the protective order.
Rider spent nine seasons in the NBA from nineteen ninety three to two thousand two, playing for the Timberwolves, Trail Blazers, Hawks, Lakers, and Nuggets. He won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in nineteen ninety four and earned a championship ring with the Los Angeles Lakers in two thousand one.
