Welcome to Arrest Stories.
A driver fled the scene of a deadly crash in Lighthouse Point, vanishing into the night only to be tracked down days later in Boca Raton.
Here's what may have happened.
The incident occurred in Lighthouse Point, a city in Broward County. Gustavo Mendez is the suspect identified by police in connection with the crash. On Sunday night, shortly before 9:30 p.m., Mendez was driving a grey Toyota Corolla when he struck a scooter rider at the intersection of Northeast 49th Street and North Federal Highway. Instead of stopping to assist, police say Mendez left the area immediately after the collision. The 39-year-old scooter rider was transported to Broward Health North but was later pronounced dead from his injuries. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit handled the investigation and obtained a warrant for Mendez’s arrest. On Thursday night, Lighthouse Point Police arrested Mendez in Boca Raton after locating him and his vehicle. Mendez is formally charged with failure to remain at the scene of a crash involving death. He is currently being held at the Broward County Main Jail on a $50,000 bond. Police have not released the identity of the victim or a motive for the crash. All suspects presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Do not take this report as factual, always verify facts.
