On July twenty-third, two thousand twenty-six, Bloomington police officers responded to a physical disturbance at an apartment in the two hundred block of East Twentieth Street in Bloomington, Indiana. The disturbance involved Indiana Hoosiers defensive end Tyrone Keith Burrus Junior and Kira Marie Motley.
According to Bloomington police captain Ryan Pedigo, the trouble began when the pair argued about Burrus going to the apartment complex pool with friends without Motley. Pedigo stated, quote, both reported to officers that they were battered by the other during the argument, with Ms. Motley reportedly spraying Mr. Burrus in the face with pepper spray during the incident and Mr. Burrus reportedly grabbing Ms. Motley by her neck with his hand, thereby restricting her ability to breathe, end quote.
Officers also learned that Motley had been living in Burrus' apartment since early July and that the two were in a relationship. Both individuals were taken into custody without incident.
Burrus was booked at the Monroe County jail on preliminary charges of strangulation and domestic battery. The strangulation charge carried a Level six felony designation, which in Indiana carries a penalty of six months to two and a half years in prison with fines up to ten thousand dollars. The domestic battery charge was a Class A misdemeanor. Motley also faced a domestic battery charge.
Burrus remained in custody at the Monroe County jail through Friday morning before being released at twelve forty-nine in the afternoon on Friday, July twenty-fourth. Monroe County chief deputy prosecutor Jeff Kehr announced that his office would not pursue charges against either individual, stating, quote, we determined that the case cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, end quote.
An IU spokesperson issued a statement saying, quote, IU Athletics is aware of the situation. We will continue to gather facts, cooperate with and monitor the legal process, and take further action as the evolving situation warrants, end quote.
Burrus, a Warren Central graduate from Indianapolis, played in two games last season while redshirting. He originally committed to Louisville before signing with the Hoosiers in two thousand twenty-five as the number nine ranked player in the state.
