A father claimed he was sleeping next to his toddler when the boy died, but police say that story was a lie.

Here's what may have happened.

Officers responded to the Legacy at West Cobb Apartments on Favor Road after reports of an unresponsive child. Police found the two-year-old boy unresponsive and rendered aid before transporting him to Kennestone Hospital. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital after suffering from neglect. Investigators discovered the father had left the child alone for approximately six hours while visibly ill. When interviewed prior to arrest, the suspect initially told police he was home sleeping with his son. Police say investigators determined that statement was false after interviewing the child's daughter and reviewing surveillance. Authorities have identified the suspect as Lolo Anilus. Anilus is formally charged with second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children, and making false statements. He was booked into the Cobb County Adult Detention Center and is being held without bond. The Cobb County Police Department handled the investigation. Police have not released the child's name.
