Welcome to Arrest Stories. A fifty-nine year old Independence, Missouri man led law enforcement on a wild early morning pursuit that ended with a box cutter, a bag of mini donuts, and a trip to the hospital. Heres what may have happened.
Just before four in the morning on a Sunday, a Clay County Sheriffs Office deputy spotted a vehicle speeding and changing lanes without signaling on Interstate four thirty five near Shoal Creek Parkway. Dispatchers then confirmed the vehicles license plate was registered to a different vehicle. When the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, the driver fled.
The driver, later identified as Scott K. Adkins, fifty nine, of Independence, Missouri, continued at high speed, swerving between lanes. At one point, Adkins went off the road, striking a yield sign and a low hanging tree. The vehicle returned to Interstate four thirty five and continued fleeing until a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper conducted a tactical vehicle intervention near Cookingham Road, bringing the car to a stop.
Adkins refused commands to exit the vehicle. Deputies described him as acting erratically, reaching around inside the vehicle, which caused law enforcement to fear he may have been attempting to locate a weapon. Negotiations were attempted. Adkins told police they would have to kill him to get him out.
When Adkins was momentarily distracted by looking at his phone, a Sheriffs Office deputy broke a window to attempt to remove him from the vehicle. Adkins first swung a bag of mini donuts at the deputy before thrusting a box cutter with the blade extended at the deputy. The deputy was not hurt. All law enforcement on scene backed away while a Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper continued negotiations.
Adkins then began drifting in and out of consciousness before stabbing himself in the abdomen. A Platte County Sheriffs Office deputy successfully deployed a Taser on Adkins, rendering him temporarily immobile. Clay County deputies then removed Adkins from the vehicle. An ambulance transported him to the hospital, where his self inflicted wounds were determined to be superficial. Deputies located six box cutters inside the vehicle.
Adkins now faces charges of second degree assault on law enforcement, armed criminal action, and aggravated fleeing from law enforcement under Valentines Law. His bond has been set at two hundred thousand dollars. Additional charges for driving while intoxicated may follow, pending lab results.
All suspects presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Do not take this report as factual, always verify facts. Thanks for watching Arrest Stories.
