Loudoun County Sheriff's Office deputies responded around seven thirty-two p.m. to the twenty thousand block of Northpark Drive in Ashburn, Virginia, after receiving a report of a shooting. When deputies arrived, they found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
The victim was identified as fifty-seven-year-old Mia Bieniemy. Authorities confirmed that Mia Bieniemy herself placed the nine-one-one call following the shooting. She was reported to be in stable condition and underwent surgery to treat her injuries. According to a criminal complaint, Mia Bieniemy was shot with a twenty-two-caliber gun twice, once in the left forearm and once in the shoulder, with that bullet traveling across her chest. Part of the bullet remains inside her body.
Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman addressed the investigation publicly, stating, "I'll just say she was shot multiple times, and we have to go through an entire investigation to determine where everybody was, what they did, what prompted it, and how it all transpired. We're conducting that investigation right now."
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, twenty-seven, of Ashburn, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. Jail records show Elijah Bieniemy was booked into the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center at two forty-one a.m. on July twenty-seventh. He is being held without bond. Sheriff Chapman confirmed that Elijah Zion Bieniemy is the son of Mia Bieniemy and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Chapman also stated there had been no previous incidents reported at the home.
A preliminary hearing for Elijah Bieniemy is scheduled for August thirty-first. The public defender is listed as his attorney in online court records.
Eric Bieniemy was at the Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, at the time of the shooting. He did not attend Monday's practice. The Kansas City Chiefs released a statement saying, "The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won't have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them."
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation Monday, saying, "Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. Thoughts and prayers are with them. We all love EB, and you hate seeing these kind of things happen. The most important thing is that EB has an opportunity to spend some time there and take care of that business."
