The Marietta, Cobb, and Smyrna Narcotics Unit, operating as a joint task force, had been conducting weeks of surveillance and investigative efforts. That operation lasted approximately one month before it culminated in a single traffic stop on a Monday in Cobb County, Georgia.
When deputies pulled over the vehicle, they conducted a search and discovered more than twenty five pounds of suspected fentanyl. The driver was taken into custody and identified by law enforcement as Akira Garcia Mon Dragon. During the stop, deputies also recovered a firearm from the scene.
Officials with the Marietta, Cobb, and Smyrna Narcotics Unit estimated the seized fentanyl carried a street value of one point six five million dollars.
Akira Garcia Mon Dragon now faces charges of trafficking fentanyl and possessing a firearm while committing a controlled substance related felony.
Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens addressed the significance of the seizure in a statement, saying, quote, fentanyl is one of the most dangerous drugs our communities have ever faced. An amount comparable to a few grains of salt can be enough to take a life. By removing more than twenty five pounds of fentanyl from our streets, our investigators potentially prevented countless tragedies and saved lives throughout Cobb County and beyond, end quote.
The Cobb County Sheriffs Office characterized the traffic stop as the product of routine interdiction work carried out by deputies and their partner agencies. The investigation is described as still active, and authorities have not yet released additional details about the case.
