On May 2, Desmontrez Mathis was arrested as the third suspect in the fatal March 8 shooting of a three-year-old Athens child, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police Department press release.

Mathis was arrested in Augusta, Georgia, and charged with two counts of murder, four counts of aggravated assault, a violation of the Georgia Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act. He also faces a federal charge for unlawful flight.

Mathis is currently being held in Athens-Clarke County Jail.

Mathis was arrested in an operation with ACCPD’s Criminal Investigation Division, the Middle Georgia FBI Safe Streets Task Force, the CSRA FBIS Safe Streets Task Force and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department.

The fourth suspect, 18-year-old Dakious Echols, is still at large. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to contact Sergeant Black at 762-400-7058 or scott.black@accgov.com.
