HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A gunman was caught driving away after a woman was shot in the chest and was spotted running along a Hillsborough street early Saturday morning, police said.

The incident was reported around 1:30 a.m. Saturday when officers saw a “woman in distress” running across Cardinal Drive, according to a Hillsborough Police Department Saturday afternoon news release.

Officers quickly learned the injured woman had been shot in the chest, police said. The street where the woman was running is just off Interstate 85 at S. Churton Street and contains a McDonald’s, Holiday Inn Express and other businesses.

“While in the area, officers observed a vehicle fleeing the area (and) stopped the vehicle,” police said in the news release.

Stephan Brooks, 75, of Charlotte was arrested and officers said they found a gun during the arrest.

The victim was transported to Duke University Hospital and was listed as stable later Saturday.

Police said Monday they learned the suspect and victim were traveling together from Charlotte.

Brooks was charged with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree kidnapping, police said.

He is being held without bond in the Orange County Detention Center.
