Welcome to Arrest Stories. A popular YouTube activist with over one million subscribers was arrested at a police union headquarters in Brentwood after a confrontation caught on camera. Heres what may have happened.
Sean Reyes, known online as The Long Island Auditor, showed up uninvited to the Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association headquarters in Brentwood on a Thursday. Reyes, who has one point zero three million YouTube subscribers, is known for filming in public buildings in what he describes as a test of First Amendment rights.
According to PBA President Lou Civello, Reyes arrived at the headquarters and confronted union members on video. The confrontation centered on reports that officers who had admitted to misconduct were allowed to remain on the force until their pensions became active. Civello described the encounter as threatening, stating on the record, he was threatening us, he threatened to come to my home.
The Thursday arrest did not come without prior buildup. Just two days earlier, on a Tuesday, Reyes had appeared at the Suffolk County Board of Legislatures, where he confronted elected officials about the same misconduct reporting. Reyes also claimed that a Suffolk County officer had been found snooping in his backyard, though that claim has not been independently verified in official statements.
When Reyes arrived at the PBA headquarters on Thursday, he refused to leave when asked. Suffolk County Police confirmed that Reyes was arrested following that refusal. He was charged with trespassing in the third degree and issued a desk appearance ticket rather than being taken into full custody.
An official spokesperson for the police department did not specify the full scope of charges Reyes faced beyond what was confirmed at the time of arrest.
The case has drawn attention given Reyes's large online following and his history of documenting encounters with law enforcement and public officials on camera.
